Circle of Health – Expanding Berlin’s medical care

Author: Ann-Kathrin Salich

Supervisor: Prof. Lars Steffensen
Technische Universität Berlin

Description

(...)

During my urban analysis of Berlin, I found that Berlin offers various contact points and health facilities but due to their position and appearance, they don’t reach the people and thus do not fix health issues efficiently. Therefore I realised that this city needs a new typology of patient-focused health centres. - Health centres that are located within the city where people would regularly pass by without needing to specifically search for them. Health centres which are compelling enough to encourage people to regularly review their health status and which are offering a comprehensive selection of medical facilities promoting healing and prevention. Health centres whose architecture raises awareness about health topics and encourage a change of behaviour not only through the health facilities placed within the building but already the architectural design presented towards the urban surrounding.

Jury statement:

The project proposes a series of smaller care centres of different disciplines at central junctions of Berlin’s Ringbahn. This strategic approach is praised by the jury as very innovative, as it addresses the highly relevant question of “how do I bring health care and prevention to the city dweller”. The design of variable modules that vary in design according to the discipline of the centre is also rated positively. Overall, the jury praised a very innovative and strong design project, which was preceded by intensive research and examination of the health care structures.

Charité statement:

The project addresses the health care of the population of a large city and formulates an innovative approach to solutions for future-oriented forms of care. While the project relates to Berlin, it could be transferred to other big cities.
