Author's description

"In a survey made with European healthcare staff in April 2021, 98 % of the medical staff report that they experience emotions connected to developing burnout syndrome. (…) Through our proposal, we want to show that it is important to work towards creating an attractive workplace where both the staff’s needs are made visible and where the physical environment is attractive with restorative qualities. By prioritizing these issues, a workplace is created where the staff can thrive and maintain a sustainable working life. (…)

The result is a design proposal consisting of partly acupuncture interventions called satellites and mainly a building, with a restorative layout that supports healthcare workers mental health both in a preventive and rehabilitating manner. It is located within Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. The restorative spaces are designed to be accessible both for shorter or longer breaks as well as before and after work.

We hope that the issue of the physical environment for hospital workers will be prioritized in the design of future care facilities and that a space for rest is offered."

Jury statement

"The project addresses a very pressing and relevant issue in healthcare: the stress of hospital staff. It shows the realistic and sensitively considered potential of an existing campus to contribute to the sustainability of a hospital by providing staff with a stress-reducing and healthy environment."
