Refugium regenerativum - District hospital Baraka, DR Congo

Author: Philipp Knaus

Supervisor: Prof. Carsten Roth / Dr. Wolfgang Sunder
Technische Universität Braunschweig

Description

„Refugium Regenerativum“ deals with the planning and development of possible hospital concepts in economically disadvantaged regions and crisis areas. According to the motto „Building with the community, for the community“, the complex is to be sustainable and as uncomplicated as possible in its architecture and materiality, without radiating the charm of a purely functional building. People and their well-being are the absolute focus of the planning. A piece of healing architecture.

Jury statement:

The jury considers the project to make a contribution that is both relevant in the context of developing countries and programmatically complex. The intensive examination of local building forms and the spatial requirements in the context of the prevailing local conditions is praised. Conceptually, the design appears very mature and well elaborated. Individual functional areas of hospital operations were considered and elaborated in detail. It is well conceivable that the project could be realised on the basis of this design. The detailed planning of the design also goes deep and offers aesthetic solutions using local materials. In addition, the design was presented in a graphically appealing way.
