It’s Cool to Get Old: Rethinking Elderly Care Facility as a Community Infrastructure
Supervisor: Dr. Amelie Rost
Anhalt University Of Applied Sciences
How do we want to live in old age? The jury recognises in this project a visually compelling and thoughtful approach to the design of facilities for elderly care. Set within a lively Berlin neighbourhood, the project redefines elderly care as a socially connected environment — a dignified and vibrant alternative to traditional institutional models. The jury particularly appreciates the project’s central premise: that people, even in old age, wish to remain within their familiar surroundings and community. Contemporary social and architectural themes, such as adaptive reuse and social diversity, are also addressed with sensitivity and clarity. The building is conceived as an open, well-integrated urban structure. With barrier-free design, service facilities distributed across multiple levels, integrated green spaces, and generous daylight in the living areas, the project achieves an exceptionally high quality of life for its residents.
