New Notion for the Infrastructure of Care in the Transformative Future
Supervisor: Prof. Adrian Nägel, Prof. Jacob van Rijs
Technische Universität Berlin
The project for a new rehabilitation centre in Kyiv is conceived as a trauma facility for patients in Ukraine. Located within Kyiv’s medical district, the adaptive reuse of abandoned clinic buildings establishes a new therapeutic centre, complemented by inclusive social and educational programmes. The jury particularly commends the project for its intensive engagement with the subject and its strong political relevance. The work addresses the humanitarian consequences of war with great sensitivity and explores, in depth, how architecture can contribute to their alleviation. This dual focus on architectural and humanitarian concerns is regarded as especially compelling. The jury further values the project’s engagement with themes of adaptive reuse and building within existing structures. Against this background, and in light of the project’s urgency and its significant social and therapeutic relevance, the jury has decided to award the work this year’s Charité Special Prize.
