Stefanie Matthys studied architecture at RWTH Aachen University and received her degree as Diplom-Ingenieur in 2002. She worked as a project architect in Paris at Odile Decq Benoît Cornette Architectes et Urbanistes and at Brunet Saunier Architecture, where she was involved in several hospital projects and began to specialize in healthcare architecture.
In 2009, she started working as a research associate at the Berlin University of Technology in the Department of “Architecture for Health” headed by Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller. She initiated and participated in the research projects Healing Architecture as a Keynote in Foreign Health Economics (2011) and the Healing Architecture Experts’ Meeting Dubai (2015), both sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Health.
In 2014, she published From Concepts in Architecture to German Health Economics – A Report on Healing Architecture as a Keynote in Foreign Health Economics together with Álvaro Valera Sosa (edited by Christine Nickl-Weller). Her work at the department included organizing the biannual symposium Healthcare of the Future and editing the corresponding publication Health Care of the Future (Parts 3, 4, 5, 6**, and** 7) together with Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller.
From 2017 to 2025, Stefanie served as Managing Director of the European Network Architecture for Health. She is currently working at Nickl & Partner Architekten AG in Berlin. She is the author of several articles in architectural journals and publications and has given lectures in Germany and abroad.
