Psychologically Accessible Safehouse for Suicidal People

Supervisor: Laura Arpiainen
Aalto University

The project addresses, in a courageous and thoughtful way, the design of a facility for individuals at risk of suicide in Finland. The concept envisions a “safe house” as a village-like structure, creating a built environment that responds sensitively to the needs of its users. The jury commends the project’s bravery in engaging with this important topic, as well as its approach of developing the spatial concept through evidence-based design. The programme is organised as an ensemble of buildings, creating a clear and meaningful progression from public to private spaces. The design is presented in a highly compelling manner, with strong architectural, structural and visual qualities that make the project both engaging and inspiring.
